Three years ago, Grammy award winning pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba released an ambitious double album entitled XXI Century to critical acclaim. The album featured the pianist alongside his core rhythm section of Matt Brewer on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums augmented by special guests Ignacio Berroa, Pedro “Pedrito” Martinez, Lionel Loueke and Gary Galimidi. The recording session which featured three Rubalcaba originals, pieces by Brewer and Loueke as well as covers of songs by Paul Bley, Bill Evans, Lennie Tristano and Enrique Ubieta once again redefined the boundaries of modern latin jazz. In a stroke of genius, Rubalcaba decided to immortalize the session with a 1 hour 15 minute documentary which was just released on YouTube. Watch the doc below alongside videos of two tracks from the recording, “Son XXI” and “50”.
