As the year winds to a close, we are thrown into one of my favorite times of year, the Season of Lists. This week’s Line-Up eases into it with songs from my personal favorite albums of 2018. This is the hour-long run through my personal list before we roll out the overall staff lists tomorrow. It’s a magical time for me, and I love that I get to do this every year and that there are times like these when I can do this live in an on air booth with great speakers so I can literally play my favorite music super loud as a semi-professional.
The Line-Up for 14 December 2018
Ben Wendel – July
I wanted to start with something a bit higher in energy but there just wasn’t enough time in the hour. Still, perhaps easing into the list is the best move.
Teebs – Yellow More New
Thumbscrew – Rising Snow
I’m having fun with my picks and I was happy to lead into this as the #9 choice.
Jonathan Finlayson – Refined Strut
There was time permitting for this and the way the song slinks along works for the top third of the hour.
Rel – Public Transit
Brad Mehldau Trio – Spiral
This was the beginning of a super hype set.
Javier Santiago – Tomorrow feat. John Raymond
The level of loud that I had in the studio during this song cannot be conveyed through this blurb.
Julian Lage – The Ramble
That same energy carried through this song. It was a very involved hour in a room that doesn’t entirely contain sound.
Jonny Greenwood – Proven Lands
Adam O’Farrill’s Stranger Days – Pour Maman
I’m not playing about this song. There’s a reason why O’Farrill saved it for the end of this album. It’s a super banger.
Cécile McLorin Salvant – Wild Is Love
This feels like a great palate cleanser for the hypeness while still maintaining that same level of dopeness.
Now Vs Now – Silkworm Society
This song has always felt like a warm bath, surrounding me like the album’s namesake cocoon.
Flying Lotus – Until the Quiet Comes
Makaya McCraven – Prosperity’s Fear
My commitment to the bit had a reason, clearly.
