At the tender age of 81, Wayne Shorter is incontestably a true living jazz legend. Having honed his chops with masters such as Horace Silver, Art Blakey, and Miles Davis, Shorter then proceeded to record one of the richest jazz discography in history for Blue Note records. Miles Davis said of him: “Wayne is a real composer…he knew that freedom in music was the ability to know the rules in order to bend them to your satisfaction and taste…” In 2001, Shorter formed a new quartet featuring pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade, each a celebrated recording artist and bandleader in his own right. This is the band which performed last October at the Stockholm Jazz Festival. Watch the inspiring one and a half hour set by Shorter and acolytes, which substantiates that musical genius is truly everlasting. Courtesy of Arte, the video expires February 18th.
